Vol. 302 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Commando Force.

33.

asked the Minister for Defence if the Army intends to set up a commando-type force.

Selected members of the Permanent Defence Force have been given Ranger and other specialised training. This training is being continued.

Is the Minister satisfied that the Ranger force we have is a specialised enough force to deal with the different variations which army forces have to deal with recently particularly as far as the Middle East is concerned taking into consideration that we must gear ourselves in case of an emergency? Is the Minister satisfied that our Ranger force is adequate?

The members of our forces are trained to deal with all eventualities that can reasonably be assumed to be possibilities. I am satisfied that the training that has been undertaken is of a very specialised nature. In relation to the question of further methods of training, the need for modern type equipment to deal with modern techniques now being used by certain subversive elements throughout the world is a matter kept under constant review. Continuing studies are carried out and the training is updated from time to time.

Is it envisaged to set up a specific commando-type force to deal with this type of activity?

We have specialised training, but I am not sure what the Deputy means by commando training.

I feel that the Ranger type force we have at present are not given the specialised training that is needed in this day and age. I suggest that the Minister look into that.
