Vol. 304 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Ownership.

10.

asked the Minister for Education if he will consider bringing into public ownership or trustee-ship all schools in receipt of public money in order to ensure the continuity and rational organisation of education in Ireland.

I do not consider such a proposal to be necessary or desirable.

Does the Minister not agree that there is a precedent for this in the case of all community schools whose trustees are appointed by the Minister for Education? Would he not consider doing something like this in respect of all schools which are in receipt of public money?

I am pleased with the community school and comprehensive school development but the answer to Question No. 10 remains the same: I do not consider the proposal mentioned in the Deputy's question necessary or desirable.

Is the Minister satisfied with the situation in which comparatively large sums of public money can be invested in educational institutions without any control by the Minister over whether these institutions remain open or closed other than a requirement to repay a loan?

That is a separate question.

That is a separate question which I answered last week. Some of the actual statistics I gave last week were amazing to me.

Is the Minister satisfied with that situation?

The Minister is satisfied only with one situation and that is adequate, full provision for secondary places in the north city area, the south city area and the country in general.

Is the Minister aware that a great many other people are not too satisfied?

There are people who will never be satisfied.
