Vol. 305 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free Electricity Scheme.

35.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his attention has been drawn to a leaflet distributed by the ESB, stating, inter alia, that deserted wives may be eligible for free electricity allowance; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My attention has been drawn to the leaflet referred to by the Deputy. The statement that a recipient of deserted wife's benefit may be eligible for free electricity allowance should have been qualified to indicate that she should have reached 66 years of age. The board is taking the necessary steps to ensure that the correct position will be stated in future.

Would the Minister consider amending the scheme to bring it in line with the ESB's leaflet?

Not at present.
