Vol. 305 No. 6

Written Answers. - National School Temporary Teacher.

471.

asked the Minister for Education if it is in order for the board of management of a national school to dismiss a temporary teacher who is being paid by his Department on one day's notice (details supplied); if he will arrange to have an appropriate amount in lieu of notice paid to the teacher concerned; and the authorised quota of teachers for the school in question.

The authorised quota of staff in the school in question is 18 teachers. As the Deputy is aware, the position under the rules for national schools is that the appointment and removal of teachers are matters for the managerial authorities. In the case of the person referred to, there was no question of an appointment because of the absence of any recognised qualifications for the post. There was simply an acceptance of services on a temporary basis as an exceptional matter pending the appointment of a qualified teacher. In such cases payment of salary is made for actual service only and the question of any payment in lieu of notice does not arise. The period of service was from 6 February to 6 March, 1978.

Question No. 472 postponed.
