Vol. 306 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Adoption Societies.

8.

asked the Minister for Justice the arrangements for the registration and inspection of adoption societies; and the criteria on which registration is granted.

In accordance with the Adoption Acts, 1952 to 1976, the registration of adoption societies is a matter for An Bord Uchtála. The most relevant provisions are those contained in Part IV of the Adoption Act, 1952 and in particular in sections 36 to 38.

The citing of sections without having the relevant statutes available gives rise to some difficulty. Will the Minister give an indication as to what is the situation regarding registration?

The Deputy must forgive me if I say it is not my job to do his research for him. I say that with the utmost respect and regard for the Deputy. The practice always has been to refer a Deputy to the relevant section in relation to giving an answer to a question. Part IV is a long section and it would take me ten minutes to read it out. I suggest that the best I can do for the Deputy is to have a photocopy made and give it to him today or tomorrow.

May we take it that the Minister is satisfied with the arrangements for registration of adoption societies?

There is a request that things be looked at and that perhaps regulations might be updated. For obvious reasons I am not prepared to give a personal opinion on the matter now.

With regard to the question of inspection, will the Minister state if there is regular inspection of adoption societies by way of checking their books and accounts?

I gather that the requirements laid down in the Act are being complied with.

Does that give rise to the question as to whether the requirements in the Act are sufficient? Has concern been voiced about the matter?

I have told the Deputy that the requirements laid down in the Act are being met with.

Does the Minister accept that concern has been voiced on this subject?

I accept that it has.

Does the Minister accept that it may need action?

Will the Deputy please resume his seat? I am calling Question No. 9.
