Vol. 306 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sligo Housing.

148.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will explain the delay in sanctioning the tender accepted by Sligo Corporation for the Mougheraboy housing scheme; and if he will sanction this scheme immediately in view of the large number of persons on Sligo Corporation's housing list.

149.

asked the Minister for the Environment if the NBA have accepted a tender for stage 4 of Sligo Corporation Abbeyquarter housing estate, which was advertised for tender some months ago; and if he will give a date for the starting of this scheme, in view of the number of people looking for houses and the number of unemployed in the city of Sligo and its environs.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 148 and 149 together.

Before I can give a decision on the proposed acceptance by Sligo Corporation of a tender for the housing scheme at Maugheraboy, I will have to be satisfied that the allocation of capital to finance the scheme is justified on the basis of the urgency of the housing needs which it will meet, relative to the needs of other areas where new schemes are proposed. For this purpose, I intend to have a local investigation of the comparative urgency of present housing needs in Sligo Borough made shortly.

The National Building Agency have not yet accepted a tender for Stage 4 of the Abbeyquarter scheme. I am not in a position, at this stage, to say when the scheme is likely to be started.
