Vol. 306 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Cork Sewerage Scheme.

150.

asked the Minister for the Environment the cost of (1) providing the original sewerage system for new houses at Ballyhea, County Cork; and (2) providing a second sewerage system; and if he will hold an inquiry to examine the resulting waste of public money.

I understand that a scheme of 14 houses completed in 1975 in Ballyhea was planned and carried out by Cork County Council as a devolved scheme. I am informed that the original sewerage system, provided at a cost of approximately £1,000, consisted of a communal septic tank which proved inefficient due mainly to the sloping nature of the site and the poor soakage characteristics of the soil.

The county council decided to provide a new sewerage disposal system to serve the houses in question and work on its completion will commence shortly. The estimated cost of the new scheme, which will incorporate the existing septic tank, is £25,000.

Having regard to the circumstances of the case. I do not consider that the holding of an inquiry as suggested by the Deputy would serve any useful purpose.
