Vol. 306 No. 7

Written Answers. - Secondary School Closures.

162.

asked the Minister for Education the number of secondary schools which have notified him of their intention to close down within the next six years; and their locations and exact addresses.

The authorities of the following schools have given public notice that the schools will be closing within the next six years:—

The Maria Assumpta School, Gardiner Street, Dublin; The Holy Faith Convent, Dominick Street, Dublin; The Christian Brothers' School, Fermoy, County Cork.

It must be appreciated that, if, at any time, the Minister for Education had information on a confidential basis in relation to the intentions of the authorities of a school to close the school within a period of six years, it would not be open to him to disclose such information prior to a public statement being made by the authorities of the school concerned in connection with the matter. It should not, however, be inferred from this observation that there are at present any such schools.

163.

Capital grants towards the cost of the building and equipment were paid in the case of two of these schools. It is not in accordance with normal practice to disclose the amounts of grants paid to an individual school. A capital grant of £6,919.25 for a minor building project was paid to one secondary school which subsequently closed down. The intention was that this accommodation would be used for primary school purposes. Should this not materialise, a refund of the unexpired portion of the State grant would be made.

In the case of one other school which closed down, a capital grant of £1,968.86 was allocated for mobile pre-fabricated classrooms. A refund of the unexpired portion of the State grant is being made.
