Vol. 306 No. 10

126.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of fatal work accidents in each of the last five years (a) in industry and (b) in agriculture; and the title of the protective legislation in force for the welfare of (i) industrial workers and (ii) agricultural workers.

The total number of fatal accidents in each of the last five years in industry, namely, workplaces covered by the Factories and Mines and Quarries Acts, was:

1973

1974

1975

1976

1977

32

25

21

18

26

The Minister for Agriculture has provided me with the following statistics of fatal farm accidents:

1973

1974

1975

1976

1977

25

34

30

29

23

The protective legislation in force in this field in relation to industrial workers is the Factories Act, 1955 and the Mines and Quarries Act, 1965 and regulations made under those Acts.

Farm and safety is not the subject of a special code of legislation. However certain regulations which relate to agriculture, have been made under other legislation namely the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations, 1969 and the Poisons Act 1961 (Paraquat) Regulations 1975.
