Vol. 307 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - Glandore (Cork) Television Reception .

19.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the very poor television reception in the Glandore area, County Cork; and the steps he proposes to take to improve the situation.

(Dublin South-Central): RTE are aware that television reception in the area in question is less than adequate. They have no plans for improvement of reception in the near future.

: Can the Minister enlighten us as to the problems involved in it?

(Dublin South-Central): The Deputy is probably aware that this particular locality poses a problem. I understand that a cable system has been offered to Leap and other local communities. The same facility was offered to Glandore some time ago but they did not accept it at that time. It will definitely be necessary to have some cable system there in order to have proper reception.

: I understand that in the adjoining village the cable system was satisfactory. Is the Minister telling us that the system is not acceptable locally?

(Dublin South-Central): No; it is not that it was not acceptable but it was not accepted.

: Could the Minister say why? Was it on grounds of cost or what?

(Dublin South-Central): I have no idea. I am sure the Deputy will find out from the local people.

: Will the Minister ensure that somebody from RTE will again visit the area and see the people involved and try to work out a satisfactory solution to the problem?

(Dublin South-Central): If a request is made to RTE on this matter I have no doubt they will consider it.

: Could the Minister say if a site was acquired by his Department a few years ago for the erection of a booster station to improve reception in this area?

(Dublin South-Central): I have no information to that effect.

: It is a separate question.
