Vol. 307 No. 13

Written Answers . - Mayo Road Works .

183.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in the case of County Mayo, he is aware of the serious situation in relation to the mileage of road yet to be blacktopped; and if he is prepared to allocate a special contribution to ease the situation.

: I am aware that County Mayo has a seven-year programme of blacktopping and that 63.5 per cent of county roads are blacktopped. The planning and construction of works involving blacktopping, and their timing and execution are matters for Mayo County Council. The cost of such works falls to be met from the county council's own resources supplemented by the annual block grant from my Department. The council's block grant for the current year is £594,000. In determining the amount of this grant I have already taken into account the council's programme to which I have referred.
