asked the Minister for the Environment the present level of fines in force for the dumping of litter; and the number of prosecutions brought since June 1977 for this offence.

: Section 52 of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963 provides for a maximum fine of £10 for the offence of throwing litter. Local bye-laws which have been made by some local authorities also provide for fines of up to £5 for littering offences.

There is no information available in the Department on numbers of prosecutions.
