Vol. 307 No. 14

Written Answers . - Revenue Yields .

119.

asked the Minister for Finance the revenue yield from (a) an increase of four pence on a pint of stout and a glass of spirits; and (b) an increase of four pence on the price of 20 cigarettes; and the estimated effect of both increases on the consumer price index.

: As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Increase in duties (including VAT element)

Estimated additional yield (including VAT) in a full year.

Consumer Price Index effect (percentage points)

£million

4p on a pint of stout*

19.0

+0.7

4p on a glass of spirits

8.6

+0.2

4p on 20 cigarettes* in the most popular price category

13.8

+0.4

Total

41.4

+1.3

* These estimates are based on the assumption that the increased charges on stout and cigarettes would be accompanied by proportionate increases on other beers and manufactured tobacco, respectively.
