Vol. 307 No. 14

Written Answers . - National Prices Commission .

57.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if the present structure in the National Prices Commission is under review; and if greater power of price control will be given to the commission.

: I have just completed a review of the structure of the commission. With a view to enhancing its capacity to discharge its statutory functions I have appointed Mr. Patrick M. Lyons, who is at present a member of the Restrictive Practices Commission to act as an additional member on the Prices Commission.

With regard to the second part of the Deputy's question, I should point out that the National Prices Commission is an advisory body whose function it is to keep under review the prices of commodities and charges for services and to advise me in relation to these matters. I do not intend to propose that greater powers of price control be granted to the commission as I consider that such powers should remain under ministerial control.
