Vol. 308 No. 3

Written Answers. - EEC Education Report.

510.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the existence of an EEC report (details supplied) which alleges that Irish schools provide little opportunity for girls over 15 to study scientific subjects or maths; if he agrees with the statement; the action he is taking to remedy the situation; and the response he will be making on this topic to the EEC Education Ministers meeting in Brussels on 27 November, 1978.

I am aware of the existence of the report to which the Deputy refers. This report on "Equality of Education and Training for Girls in the Second Level of Education" was prepared for the EEC Commission by an expert appointed by them for the purpose. The report has been referred by the Commissioner for examination by the EEC Education Committee who may submit recommendations thereon to the EEC Education Ministers. I would not consider it appropriate for me to offer observations on it prior to its submission to the Ministers and their consideration of it.
