asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why it is virtually impossible to dial directly to any number in the 091 and 093 areas; and if he will rectify this serious situation.
The difficulty in dialling to these areas is due to general difficulties with the telephone system since the industrial action by engineering staff earlier this year and to shortage of trunk equipment in the area to meet growing traffic. Completion of development works that had been planned to improve the position in the two areas, consisting of a major extension to the Galway exchange and the provision of additional circuits to Galway, were delayed. The extension to the trunk exchange will begin to be brought into service next month and it is expected that additional trunk circuits will be provided within the next six months. Further improvements will come according as the trunk network generally is improved.
