Vol. 308 No. 4

Written Answers. - Mayo Industries.

484.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the steps which have been taken, and the proposals for the provision of a male-orientated industry in Castlebar, County Mayo.

I would refer the Deputy to a reply which I gave to a similar question on 25 April, 1978. I would add that the Industrial Development Authority are continuing their efforts to acquire a new industrial site in the town which will be promoted for male employing industry, and work has been commenced by the authority on the construction of the 15,000 square feet cluster development for small-scale industry.

485.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the proposals for the provision of an industry in Newport, County Mayo.

I am informed that consideration is being given by the Industrial Development Authority to the acquisition of a site in Newport which would be promoted for suitable industry. The authority have recently approved grant assistance for the expansion of an existing industry in the town which is expected to provide an additional five jobs.

I should add also that in the IDA Industrial Plan 1977-80 Newport is in a town grouping, including Castlebar and nearby towns, for which a job creation target of 500 has been set for the period.
