Vol. 308 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inadequacy of Benefits.

58.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware of the strong opinion within the Income Maintenance Group of the Irish Association of Social Workers, that the current levels of social insurance and social assistance benefits are not adequate to enable individuals and families to live above the poverty line; and if he intends to ensure substantial increases in these basic levels of support.

I am aware that a sub-committee of the Irish Association of Social Workers has been examining this question and I intend to meet the members of the sub-committee to discuss their views with them.

Increases in the level of social welfare benefits, as the Deputy no doubt is aware, are a matter for decision in the context of the annual budget and I will have due regard at that time to any representations that will be of assistance in dealing with the matter.
