Vol. 308 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Register.

59.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total number of people whose names have been removed from the live register of unemployment over the past year; and the principal reason for such removal.

The number of persons in the live register of the unemployed decreased over the year ending 29 September 1978 by 11,848, from 104,859 to 93,011.

The statistics maintained do not distinguish between those who leave the live register of their own volition on taking up employment, for example, and those who for one reason or another may be taken off the register on exhausting their title to benefit or on being disallowed.

The Minister is reading very fast and it is difficult to follow him.

I will slow down.
