Vol. 308 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Timber Industry.

22.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if, in view, of the massive increase in production from State forests, he will consider setting up a chemical pulp mill in Waterford in conjunction with Munster Chipboard to process the additional timber.

The Industrial Development Authority in consultation with my Department are at present engaged in a sectoral study of the timber industry. Pending completion of the study I would prefer not to speculate on the location or type of industry which will use the wood resources, now coming on stream in increasing volume, to best national advantage.

Is such a mill desirable?

Yes, we need a further sophisticated dimension to our timber processing activities.

Does the Minister see a distinct possibility of such an industry being set up in the near future?

Yes, I would hope so.

23.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the total number employed in the timber industry in the country; and if he will give a break-down of those involved in (a) forestry, logging and transport; and (b) the processing sector.

The statistics sought by the Deputy are not available. It is, however, estimated that about 6,725 people are employed in the timber industry of whom 4,925 are employed in State and private forest undertakings and 1,800 in sawmilling and timber processing. Some logging and transportation employment would be included in both figures. The figures do not include any forward linkage such as conversion of wood and particle board into furniture or employment in the construction industry, which is also related.
