Vol. 308 No. 9

Written Answers. - Auxiliary Postmen.

478.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the average weekly wage for auxiliary postal delivery men; and the average number of hours worked each week per person.

The information is not readily available in the form requested by the Deputy and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost. However, the following information may be useful.

There are about 1,250 auxiliary postmen serving at over 1,000 post offices. They work from 18 to 35½ hours weekly, the majority working 30 hours per week or more. The hourly rates of pay vary in accordance with length of service.

The pay of an auxiliary postman working 35½ hours per week is £48.53 per week at the maximum and £42.03 at the minimum of the scale. The pay of an auxiliary postman working 18 hours per week is £24.61 per week at the maximum and £21.31 at the minimum.
