Vol. 309 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Donegal Fishing Facilities.

491.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the proposals for the provision of facilities for fishermen at Portmor, Malinhead, County Donegal; and when a power driven crane will be installed.

My Department have recently offered 75 per cent State grant to the Donegal County Council for the purpose of providing a powered crane for the use of fishermen at Portmore Pier, Malin Head, at an estimated cost of £25,000. When this grant has been formally accepted by the county council I will instruct the Office of Public Works to arrange for the installation of the crane as soon as possible. The feasibility of also providing a slipway, winch and boatyard at Portmore is at present being investigated.

492.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the proposals for the development of Greencastle fishing port, County Donegal; and when the work will commence.

A State grant of 75 per cent of cost has been sanctioned towards the cost of a major port development scheme at Greencastle. The Donegal County Council have agreed to contribute the balance of 25 per cent of the cost. The scheme includes the extension of the existing pier and construction of a new pier to provide additional berthage accommodation, deepening of the existing berthage area, reclamation of an area of 8,250 square yards and the provision of an auction hall and other ancillary facilities.

Site investigations are under way. When these are completed the plans and specifications will be drawn up and tenders sought. I am advised that, in view of the probable time it will take to complete the preliminaries including the seeking and placing of tenders, it is unlikely that actual work on the development scheme will commence before 1980.
