Vol. 309 No. 8

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Areas Scheme.

405.

asked the Minister for Agriculture when changes in the boundaries in regard to the disadvantaged areas scheme will be made; and if he is taking steps to extend the boundary to include additional areas in south-west Cork.

406.

asked the Minister for Agriculture when a decision will be made on the extension of the disadvantaged areas; and the areas in Cork which will be included.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 405 and 406 together.

The timing and extent of changes to be made in relation to the areas in Ireland listed as disadvantaged by the Community depend on the outcome of a submission to be sent shortly to the authorities in Brussels. The position is that representations have been received in respect of many areas throughout the country, including south-western and other parts of County Cork, and at present these are being carefully reviewed in my Department. Immediately following this review which is nearing completion, the matter will be submitted to Brussels and an early decision sought. Pending this decision, a definitive announcement concerning changes in the boundaries of the disadvantaged areas is not possible.
