Vol. 309 No. 10

Written Answers. - Classical Study Course.

324.

asked the Minister for Education if proposals for a classical studies course in post-primary schools are under study in his Department; how long such a study has been in progress; when he expects it to be concluded; if he plans to introduce such a course; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Recommendations for the introduction of courses in classical studies in post-primary schools were submitted to my Department by the intermediate and leaving certificate syllabus committees for classics in February and May, 1978 respectively. These recommendations are at present under study. It is not possible to predict when the study will be completed since it involves investigation of matters relating to the content and methodology of such courses, and the setting of examinations on them as well as to their status in the post-primary curriculum as a whole. Until such time as this study has been completed I shall not be in a position to make any statement in relation to the introduction of courses in classical studies in post-primary schools.
