Vol. 310 No. 4

Questions—Ceisteanna. Oral Answers. - Cement Roadstone Dispute.

28.

asked the Minister for Labour, in view of the decision of shop stewards in the Cement Roadstone dispute to cut off further supplies of cement to Roadstone installations, with the consequent adverse effect this will have on employment in the building industry, the action he proposes to take.

I presume the Deputy's question refers to the decision taken by shop stewards at a meeting held on 11 October last and which was aimed at restricting supplies of cement to all Roadstone installations. This action had a very limited effect for a few days; supplies of cement to the building industry in general were not affected.

The strike went on, did it not?

That is a separate question. The Deputy should read his question.

I appreciate the Minister's cleverness and dexterity. The question was put down many weeks ago. The strike is still going on and the Minister could favour the House with his opinions on that serious strike. Does he intend doing anything about it, or has he any thoughts on it?

I am sure the Deputy is aware voting is taking place today.

I am aware that there is a meeting. Has the Minister any thoughts on this dispute and on what he might do if it continues? It has been going on for many weeks. This is not exceptional. There are many more disputes.

The Deputy would be well advised to await the outcome of today's meeting.
