asked the Minister for Finance the amount of tax paid by building societies in the latest year for which figures are available.
Written Answers. - Building Societies Tax Payment.
277.
The number of Irish building societies is so small that the Revenue Commissioners fear that to supply the information asked for would not accord with the principle of observing secrecy in relation to the taxation affairs of taxpayers. However, I would like to draw attention to the charge to tax appearing in the published accounts of the building societies. For 1977, the latest year for which accounts are available, the charge to tax for the six biggest building societies was £11.6 million.
