Vol. 310 No. 4

Written Answers. - Adult Education Report.

296.

asked the Minister for Education if, and when, he proposes to take action on the Murphy Report on Adult Education.

Some of the recommendations contained in the report on Adult Education in Ireland have already been implemented. For example: (i) There has been a continuous growth in the amount of funds made available to vocational education committees for adult education purposes. (ii) Adult education officers have been sanctioned on a experimental basis for two VECs, in Counties Meath and Kilkenny. (iii) Most VECs have appointed adult education sub-committees. (iv) Many adult education organisations are affiliated to AONTAS—the National Association of Adult Education and a grant at the rate of £10,000 per annum is paid to AONTAS. (v) Many organisations are making progress in the provision of literacy classes. (vi) Grants made available by the Department of Education to voluntary organisations such as Muintir na Tíre, Macra na Tuaithe, the College of Industrial Relations and the Dublin Institute of Adult Education have been increased since the publication of the report.

The desirability and practicality of further development on the lines of the other recommendations in the report will have to be considered in the context of the future overall provision for education, and within this provision, the availability of funds for adult education.
