Vol. 310 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - East Mayo Unemployed.

2.

asked the Minister for Economic Planning and Development the number of persons unemployed at present in East Mayo under the usual heading for which statistics are compiled; and the proposals for improvement.

Live register figures for the constituency of East Mayo are not available. However, for County Mayo as a whole there was a total of 4,755 persons, being 4,527 males and 228 females, on the live register at 25 August 1978. This represents a reduction of 3.5 per cent on the total figure a year earlier. The figure for County Roscommon, part of which falls within the East Mayo constituency, for the same date was 960, being 869 males and 91 females, which is a substantial improvement on the 1977 figure.

The unemployment problem in east Mayo will be tackled within the context of the Government's proposals contained in the Green Paper "Development for full employment". The action to be taken nationally to eliminate unemployment will be set out in the forthcoming White Paper.

Has the Minister information as to the number of people in that 3½ per cent who are no longer on the unemployment register but who now have jobs? How many people who have been put off the live register have jobs and how many have simply been disqualified from drawing benefit?

That is a separate question.

I do not have up to date detailed information on the level of employment on the east Mayo area, but I have indications that the overall level of employment in the area is rising.
