Vol. 311 No. 6

Written Answers. - Multyfarnham (Westmeath) Garda Barracks

195.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that Multyfarnham, County Westmeath Garda barracks is now closed; and if any arrangements will be made to appoint a sergeant and garda for the village.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that Multyfarnham Garda station is normally open on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Sundays from 12 noon to 1 p.m. However, since 28 November last there is a vacancy there for a sergeant and, because of the reduced manpower, it was not possible to man the station on seven days since then. Whenever the station is closed, a notice is placed in the window indicating that urgent requests for Garda assistance should be directed to the District Headquarters at Granard.

I understand that the vacancy for a sergeant will be filled as soon as circumstances permit and that the current approved strength of one sergeant and two gardaí is the maximum that can be provided at present having regard to overall resources and other demands on Garda services.
