Vol. 311 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Undergraduate Places.

24.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the proposal to reduce the numbers of medical undergraduate places available; the consultations which he has entered into or intends to enter into in this matter; if he favours such moves; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

25.

asked the Minister for Education if he is satisfied with the decision of the universities to reduce medical places, in view of the increase in population and the need to increase health services throughout the country and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take questions Nos. 24 and 25 together.

The Higher Education Authority has made recommendations in regard to the maximum number of entrants to the university colleges and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland with effect from the commencement of the academic year 1980-81. It advised the Ministers for Education and Health, the Presidents of the University Colleges of the National University, the Provost of Trinity College and the President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland of its recommendations.

Questions Nos. 26 and 27 are being taken as for written reply.
