Vol. 312 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cashel (Tipperary) Vocational School.

28.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the inadequate, over-crowded and unsuitable conditions presently obtaining at Cashel vocational school, County Tipperary; and, in view of the current and future educational needs of the area, if it is his intention to provide a new school.

The question of the provision of new vocational school buildings in Cashel is a matter in the first instance for the County Tipperary (SR) Vocational Education Committee. My Department have not so far received formal proposals from the committee in the matter.

Surely the Minister is aware of the concern of teachers and pupils alike for the need for a new vocational school at Cashel? Enrolment has increased sevenfold since 1968-69. In 1968 there were 32 pupils on the rolls, now there are 226. The original building consisted of five rooms and there are now seven prefabs in what was once the school garden. The Minister must surely be aware of the need for a new school in the circumstances.

I know the Deputy is a member of the VEC and consequently is in a position to have the formal request sent to my Department, say after the next meeting of the committee. I will be glad then to ascertain if it comes. It has not come so far.
