Vol. 312 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coastal Development Proposals.

29.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the plans, if any, to promote the south-west coast as a sailing and boating centre as well as for commercial shipping purposes, by the prevention of coastal erosion, dredging of harbours, pier building or the extension of existing facilities.

The development of a particular harbour for commercial shipping is primarily the responsibility of the individual harbour authority which is statutorily established for this purpose and which from time to time may prepare development plans for its particular circumstances. Such development proposals generally require authorisation by my Department, for example, in the form of a harbours works order, as well as approval for borrowing or other means of financing the project. As far as harbours in the south-west are concerned the only specific development proposal of which I am aware is a proposal by Tralee and Fenit Pier and Harbour Commissioners to carry out additional dredging of the commercial berths at Fenit to improve facilities for larger vessels.

The promotion of sailing and boating facilities is a matter for Bord Fáilte Éireann in conjunction with local interests.
