asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport why Ireland has not joined the International Fund for Oil Pollution Damage which has been in existence since 1971.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport why Ireland has not ratified the International Convention on Civil Liability for Oil Pollution Damage, 1969.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 156 and 157 together.

Before Ireland can become a party to the International Convention on Civil Liability for Oil Pollution Damage, 1969, and the related International Convention on the Establishment of an International Fund for Compensation for Oil Pollution Damage, 1971, legislation will be required. The necessary legislation is in course of preparation.
