In reply to Question No. 225 on 31 January 1979, I gave the Deputy particulars of the number of young male and female offenders under 17 years of age sentenced or remanded to Mountjoy prison, Limerick prison and St. Patrick's Institution. The further details requested are incorporated in the table hereunder:

Forty-two male offenders under 17 years of age were transferred from the committal institutions during 1978. Twenty-eight were sent to the open centre at Shanganagh Castle, 13 to the Training Unit, Glengarriff Parade, and one was transferred to Cork prison.
