I have been informed by the Registrar of Building Societies that the amount of mortgage interest paid to the building societies in the years 1976 and 1977 was £32,798,928 and £43,796,397 respectively. The figure in respect of 1978 is not yet available.

I have been informed by the registrar of building societies that the total amount of money owed to building societies on mortgages at 31 December 1977 was £400,855,753. The figure at 31 December 1978 is not yet available.
