Vol. 314 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Student Unions.

37.

asked the Minister for Education if post-primary school students have a right to choose their own organisational structures such as students unions in schools in which they are pupils; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

This is a matter for the managerial authorities of the schools concerned.

Is the Minister not aware that in some schools students who are old enough to elect Members to the Dail are not allowed by the management authorities of their schools to set up representative structures for themselves? Does he not consider that this is an absurd situation and one that he should do something about?

I have no information whatever from any source that what the Deputy says is true.

Does the Minister not accept that people who are old enough to vote for Deputies in Dáil Éireann are old enough to organise their own representative structures in the schools in which they are pupils?
