Vol. 314 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Classroom Temperature.

36.

asked the Minister for Education the prescribed minimum temperature for a school classroom.

No minimum temperature is prescribed for national school classrooms. Discussions in relation to the heating of national schools have been in progress between officials of my Department and representatives of the managerial authorities and teaching interests and it is my intention to issue a circular to the schools in the matter before the end of the current school year or perhaps early in the school year commencing I September 1979.

Would the Minister not agree that his action in this regard is very necessary in view of the fact that we have specific minimum temperatures for factories but not for schools? Can he assure the House that the minimum temperatures which he is thinking of specifying will be observed at all times in the schools no matter how severe the next winter may be?

That will be the subject of the circular.
