Vol. 314 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Beef Exports.

40.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that exports of beef have decreased each month since July 1978 from the corresponding month in the previous year and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Beef exports in 1978 were the third highest on record and were only marginally lower than in 1977. This satisfactory level took place despite increased exports of live cattle and calves.

The livestock enumerations in June and December last show that the breeding herd which declined in 1975 and 1976 is expanding and this coupled with strong market conditions for cattle points to a continuing sound export trade.
