Vol. 314 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Pesticides.

51.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if it is proposed to introduce a national registration scheme for agricultural pesticides; the number of such pesticides now in use; and if he is satisfied with their safety and efficiency.

My Department have been considering measures for the registration and approval of pesticides and I shall be putting proposals to the Government in the near future.

There are approximately 800 agricultural pesticide products in use in this country. While there is no evidence of problems concerning the safety and efficiency of these pesticides, nevertheless in view of the increase in their use and having regard to the number of new products coming on the market, I consider it desirable to introduce appropriate controls.

Will the appropriate controls be introduced by legislation or by means of an order?

Legislation may be necessary. I have not yet considered the matter in depth.

When does the Minister expect to have the proposals considered by the Government?

Very soon.
