Vol. 314 No. 12

Written Answers. - Election Material Distribution.

98.

asked the Minister for the Environment the steps he proposes to take for the distribution of polling cards on June 7 in view of the present Post Office crisis.

99.

asked the Minister for the Environment the steps, if any, under consideration to inform voters of their respective polling booths.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 98 and 99 together.

Due to the suspension of normal postal services polling cards will not be issued to electors at the European Assembly and local elections. In accordance with the provisions of the European Assembly and Local Elections (Special Difficulty) Order, 1979, local returning officers may, instead of sending polling cards, take such steps as they consider appropriate for the purpose of informing electors of the polling day and the place at which each elector will be entitled to vote. I understand that returning officers will convey this information to electors by means of newspaper advertisements and posters displayed locally. Supplementary publicity is also being arranged by my Department.
