Vol. 315 No. 8

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

83.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if the estimate of three years from 15 November 1977, that is the end of 1980, as the likely date for the conversion of Castlejordan telephone exchange in County Meath to automatic working is still adhered to.

Present indications are that the estimate referred to will not be adhered to. When a more reliable estimate can be made, I will communicate with the Deputy.

84.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the present position in regard to the acquisition of a site for an exchange in Oldcastle, County Meath to enable conversion of telephones to automatic working, and if he adheres to the hope he expressed on 9 May 1978 that the conversion would be effected within about three years from that date.

A site has since been acquired. Because of the difficulty and consequent delay in acquiring a site, it is unlikely that it will be possible to have the exchange converted to automatic working before the end of 1981.

85.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the present position regarding the provision of extended night service facilities at Longwood and Enfield, County Meath telephone exchange, originally scheduled for provision early in 1978, as stated by him on 9 November 1977.

Under normal conditions continuous telephone service is provided at Enfield exchange.

Additional trunk lines have been provided to enable more subscribers at Longwood exchange to be given continuous service but these lines must be tested under normal working conditions when the operating staff resume duty before more subscribers can be given continuous service.

86.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the present position regarding the extension to Kilmead, County Kildare telephone exchange originally due to come into operation towards the end of 1978.

The exchange was extended in April last.
