Vol. 316 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alcoholic Drink Advertisements.

26.

asked the Minister for Health if he will outline the steps now intended to counter the widespread advertisements directed mainly at the young people by alcoholic drink interests in view of the widespread concern among responsible authorities regarding the increasing abuse of alcohol.

The Health Education Bureau have run a number of campaigns directed at influencing people to be careful and moderate in their use of alcholic drink. One of these campaigns was aimed directly at young people. Such campaigns will continue to run for the remainder of the year.

RTE have already announced the decision to introduce a stricter code of standards for drink advertising. They aim eventually to phase out this type of advertising. I am also considering a number of other possible courses of action in the area of advertising.
