Vol. 316 No. 3

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

400.

asked the Minister for Finance the schemes for the prevention of coastal erosion in County Waterford before his Department, and when it is intended to carry out the necessary work.

The Commissioners of Public Works have received proposals under the Coast Protection Act, 1963, from Waterford County Council for coast protection works at the following locations: (1) Ardmore/Curragh, (2) Ballyvoile, (3) Cunnigar, (4) Glencorran/Ballyquin, (5) Tramore, (6) Whiting Bay.

The commissioners are awaiting the completion of certain statutory requirements by the county council in relation to the applications submitted in respect of Ardmore/Curragh, Cunnigar, Glencorran/Ballyquin and Whiting Bay. The application for Tramore is listed for a statutory preliminary examination but because of prior commitments it is not possible at this stage to say when this will be carried out. The question of the relative proportion of Exchequer and county council funds to be spent on the Ballyvoile proposal has delayed progress here but a decision on this aspect will be made shortly and the Ballyvoile proposal will be proceeded with as quickly as possible having regard to other commitments, the protracted statutory processes under the 1963 Act and the availability of engineering and other staff to carry out the work.

asked the Minister for Finance the approaches, if any, made to the EEC for moneys to finance projects for the prevention of coastal erosion.

EEC fund assistance is not being sought for coast protection projects because there is a sufficient availability of other projects to utilise this country's fund quota.
