Vol. 316 No. 3

Written Answers. - Civil Service Employment.

406.

asked the Minister for the Public Service if there has been a decrease in the number of persons employed in any sections of the civil service since the year 1969 and, if so, the size of the decrease.

There has been no net decrease in the number of non-industrial civil servants employed in Departments since 1969.

407.

asked the Minister for the Public Service the total numbers of persons employed in the civil service in the years 1959, 1969 and 1979; the proportion of the public revenue and borrowing in respect of each of these three years, expressed as pence in the £ (1) represented by the salaries and allowances of the persons so employed; (2) represented by the overhead expenses, office accommodation, rents, equipment, heating etc. involved in their employment.

The information sought by the Deputy is set out in a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

The number and cost of the non-industrial civil service relate to the first working day of the year.
