Vol. 316 No. 6

Written Answers. - Handicapped Persons' Houses.

389.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of houses adapted to meet the needs of handicapped people in each of the last five years.

The information in the form requested is not available. However, the numbers of disabled persons' housing grants paid by local authorities, who administer the scheme, in each of the last five years were 201 in 1974 (April to December), 432 in 1975, 582 in 1976, 592 in 1977 and 692 in 1978.

390.

asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, for a comprehensive survey of the housing needs of physically handicapped people in Ireland.

As indicated by the Minister of State at my Department at the concluding stage of the Seanad debate on the recent Housing Bill, I propose to ask housing authorities shortly to carry out an assessment of housing needs in their areas over the next five years.

In conjunction with this assessment, arrangements are being made to ask housing authorities to indicate specifically the estimated housing needs relating to physically handicapped persons in their areas.
