Vol. 316 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dublin City Slaughterhouses.

391.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will ensure that cattle for slaughter are not held overnight in premises attached to abbatoirs located in residential areas, in view of the disturbance factor involved.

395.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of slaughterhouses in operation in Dublin city, the number of these adjacent to built-up residential areas and if he will update the licensing regulations for slaughterhouses.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take the replies to Questions Nos. 391 and 395 together.

I understand that there are 29 slaughterhouses in operation in Dublin County Borough of which 27 are adjacent to built-up residential areas.

The making of by-laws in respect of the operation of slaughterhouses is a matter for the sanitary authority subject to confirmation by the Minister for Agriculture and I have no functions in the matter. It is assumed that those by-laws are the licensing regulations referred to by the Deputy. I understand that the existing by-laws for Dublin County Borough are presently being examined by the corporation with a view to their up-dating.
