asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total number of child dependants of recipients of widows' pensions and the total number of orphans in receipt of orphans' pensions.

The information requested is as follows:

Number of child dependants of recipients of widow's pension (contributory and non-contributory) and the number of orphans in receipt of orphan's pension (contributory and non-contributory).

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the amount of the child benefit allowance in (a) this country and (b) Northern Ireland, in respect of the first, second, third and fourth child and if he is aware that such allowances in Northern Ireland are not subject to tax.

The amount of children's allowance payable under our legislation in respect of the first qualified child is £3.50 per month and in respect of the second and each subsequent child £5.50 per month. The rate of Northern Ireland child benefit is £4.00 per week in respect of each qualified child.

Neither children's allowance nor Northern Ireland child benefit is directly liable for income tax. In addition to the children's allowances payable here an allowance of £218.00 in respect of each dependent child is granted under the income tax code. No such allowance is granted under the income tax code in Northern Ireland.
