I interpret the question as applicable to the case of the following educational authorities: The National University of Ireland; University College, Dublin; University College, Cork; University College, Galway; The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies; The National College of Art and Design; The Higher Education Authority; The National Council for Educational Awards; The National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick; The National Institute for Higher Education, Dublin; Thomond College of Education; The National Gallery; The National Library; The National Museum.
With the exception of the National College of Art and Design, the appointments to the governing bodies of those educational institutions are made by the President on the advice of the Government in the case of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and by the Government in all other cases.
I have appointed six members to the Board of the National College of Art and Design. One of the six was a woman. I may add that the appointments were made on the basis of suitability and without reference to a percentage distribution as between men and women.

There are two bodies under the aegis of my Department to which I have powers of nomination—the National Economic and Social Council and the National Board for Science and Technology.
