Vol. 317 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ceimicí Teoranta Plants.

441.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if, in view of the report issued by the Joint Committee on State-Sponsored Bodies on the operations of Ceimicí Teoranta he will ensure that no job loss will take place in the company's plant in Carndonagh, County Donegal.

I understand that Ceimicí Teoranta are preparing plans to modernise and re-equip their distilleries at Carndonagh, County Donegal, and Cooley, County Louth. The company will shortly be submitting their proposals to me for my consideration. There are at present no grounds for assuming that there will be any job losses at either Carndonagh or Cooley.

442.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy with reference to the report on Ceimicí Teoranta operations, the plans, if any, to re-open the factory at Labbadish, Manorcunningham, County Donegal, in view of the high male unemployment in the area.

The factory at Labbadish was used to convert surplus potatoes into starch. There have been no surplus potatoes available since 1971 and the factory has been retained on a care and maintenance basis.

Ceimicí Teoranta are continuing their investigations into possibilities for the future use of the factory but there are no immediate plans to re-open it.
