Vol. 318 No. 3

Written Answers. - Ireland-Newfoundland Cultural Links.

368.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will promote cultural links between this country, in particular County Waterford, and Newfoundland, in view of the strong ethnic links that exist between the two communities.

I am aware of the special ethnic links to which the Deputy refers and I am anxious to do what I can to promote cultural contacts between this country and Newfoundland. As indicated in a reply by my predecessor to a similar question on 8 March 1979, my Department assist the Irish Newfoundland Association's annual "Irish Week" in St. John's. We also encourage Irish artists and lecturers going to North America to include Newfoundland in their itineraries. The Cultural Relations Committee of my Department will give full consideration to any further specific cultural projects which may be proposed.
